There were 30 of these cards for sale on the bay the other day, no one bid on them, so I did. It was three lots of 10 each for $2.50 plus $2.50 s&h. I won all three lots and got them today. 30 cards no duplicates, ranging in numbers from 20 to 306. The Gold Rush logo is in the upper right or left corner, always directly beneath the Topps logo. Sometimes it intrudes on the picture obscuring faces and such. There were no huge stars in the bunch, Mariano Rivera being the biggest, two cards with the RC logo and two checklist cards which feature season highlights on the front. The one Marlin card I got does feature the new Marlins logo and colors on it, but thankfully Topps did not airbrush the new uniform on the player.

In the bottom right hand corner of every card is the Topps website address followed by a code number. The code number is the same on all 30 cards. Does anyone have any idea what I got.

No More Pie for me, thank you!

Saturday afternoon I dropped by the LCS and picked up six packs of American Pie, 4 to open and 2 to put away for Christmas and my birthday. Out of the 4 packs that I opened these are the best cards I got. Many of the cards were of no one and celebrated nothing. I got a card for the date that some computer determined was the most boring day ever, sorry if you were born April 11, 1954.

Bing Crosby is a distant cousin on my Dad's side of the family so I am always looking for things of him. I remember someone saying their wife really liked Lucille Ball. Who doesn't like Rudolph (other than all the other reindeer. The Hitchcock (you can see him if you squint, use a microscope and look at the lower right corner) manu patch is numbered 4/25. I will probably put it on eBay unless one of you wants to trade for it. The Johnny Cash and Richard Pryor Walk of Fame cards are pretty cool. I am going to keep Johnny, but Mr. Pryor is available for trade. Also if you are trying to build the set let me know and I will send you my singles.

General and His Troops

General Manager Josh Byrnes returned this 2011 Padrographs card in just about a week and a half. Josh is the ninth General Manager the Padres have had since 1969 and I realized that I have signed cards of three of them, Buzzie Bavasi, Jed Hoyer and Josh Byrnes. I went to wikipedia and I actually have signatures on cards of five of the GM's, cause I also have Jack McKeon and Keving Towers. I am going to see if I can get signatures of the other four, Peter Bavasi, Bob Fontaine, Joe McIlvaine and Randy Smith.

I bought this Cory Spangenberg card from this years Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects off of eBay. He was the first round draft pick of the Padres, 10th overall, of the Padres this in 2011. He was playing at a college where they used wooden bats, so he has that year of experience. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Petco Park this year, as bad as I think the Padres will be.

I bought this Jason Hagerty over at eBay. Jason was picked in the fifth round of the 2009 draft. He has worked up to AA San Antonio.

The last of the commemorative lithographs, this one is from Toy Story. Toy Story is a 1995 American computer-animated film released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is Pixar's first feature film as well as the first ever feature film to be made entirely with CGI. The film was directed by John Lasseter and featuring the voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. It was written by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, and featured music by Randy Newman. Its executive producer was Steve Jobs. Toy Story follows a group of toys who pretend to be lifeless whenever humans are present, and focuses on Woody, a pullstring Cowboy doll (Hanks), and Buzz Lightyear, an astronaut action figure (Allen).

How I Spent My Sunday Afternoon

On Sunday afternoon while most people were watching football or napping, or bemoaning Ryan Braun, I got to do something completely different. The Multnomah County Library is hosting an exhibit called Pride and Passion about Negro League Baseball. Part of the exhibit was a panel about different perspectives on baseball. We had hoped to have Artie Wilson be part of the panel, but he passed away before the exhibit got to Portland. I helped put the panel together and today I got to meet all of these people and introduce them to the people attending. It was so much fun, and I got to show them around the exhibit at the library also. We took a picture during the discussion and had them all sign a couple of copies. From left to right, Lois Youngen, she played for the Fort Wayne Daisys and a couple of other teams in the All American Girls Baseball League. She got a degree in PE and went on and taught for 36 years at the University of Oregon and drove up to Portland to see a former student (who taught at my high school) and take part in the panel. She talked about how she learned to play baseball, her Dad was a pitcher and she caught him and when she played with the neighborhood boys, they gave her the choice of playing right field or catcher. She chose catcher so she could really be in the game. She is now President of the All American Girls Baseball Players Association. Next to her is Jack Cain, the only person in the room to have a bobble head made of them. Jack has always been a big fan of baseball, I consider him a Northwest baseball icon. He bought a minor league team in Bend, Oregon that became the Bend Rockies in 1991. The first Rockies game ever played was in Bend two years before the Colorado Rockies began play, 10 players from that team have now played in the majors. The team moved to Portland in 1995 when the Beavers moved to Salt Lake City, in 2001 a new franchise moved in called the Beavers and Jack was a senior adviser to the team until the politicians in Portland couldn't figure out how to keep the team here after the 2010 season. He had some great stories about some of the players he had encountered. In the center is Drew Mahalic, who moderated the panel. Drew played in the NFL for 5 years with the Chargers and Eagles, and now is the CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority, which has helped bring several major sports events to Oregon, including part of the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament to Portland. His son Joey was drafted by the Indians and played in 2011 at Kinston and Lake County. Second from the right is Kerry Eggers, sportswriter from the Portland Tribune, he had some good insights on why football has surpassed baseball in popularity. Last is Darcy Fast, who pitched for the Cubs in 1968, should have pitched for them in 1969, but the Army wouldn't let him report to camp, because they might have shipped him to Vietnam. After that he heard a higher calling and became a pastor in Centralia, WA for 30 years. He recently retired and is now President of the Phoenix, AZ chapter of the Major League Alumni Association. He has homes in Centralia and Phoenix. He had some great stories about the '68 Cubs and getting to play with 4 Hall of Famers, Ferguson Jenkins, Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Ernie Banks. He told a story about Ernie Banks giving him the keys to his car to use in Chicago, when Darcy went out to the car, all the people couldn't figure out who the young white guy was getting into Mr. Cubs car. Darcy said Ernie did this to many rookies so that he could get away with out being mobbed by the fans. Like Jack Cain said when I thanked him for coming, he said anytime someone asked him to come talk about baseball for a couple of hours he would be there. I would have to agree with him and I had a great time listening to all of them and getting to meet them and interact with them.

I am running a giveaway and it was ok when I was sending out cards I could send them pretty cheap. Then last night I mailed out a few of the action figure give a ways and it cost me $40. I am not poor, but not the 1% either. Since I am calling it a giveaway, I really agonized over asking for help, but I can't afford to keep spending that kind of money every week. I have completed three more pages of my 1957 Topps Hit Stars set. I only need 12 more cards to complete the set but I think the rest may be pretty expensive. The other day I missed on a beat to crap Bob Hope that went for around $33 dollars including shipping. I have seen one card of Buddy Holly and the Crickets and it was probably VG at best and it went for $150.

Never heard of this guy until I saw this on eBay the other day. He is 6 ft 9 in tall and weighs 280. He was drafted by the Padres in 2009 and has made it to High A ball and spent some time in the major league camp in spring training. It cost me $5.51 with free shipping. It is somewhere in the high 700's for number of Padrographs I have.

I got this in the mail on Wednesday, I had mailed it to Kevin during Spring Training. He was signed as a free agent before Spring Training and released by the Padres in March of this year. He then signed with the Phillies and spent time at three different minor league levels.

Jeff Pendergraph is my sons favorite NBA player and we were able to pick several of these up. They are numbered out of 499. We have managed to pick up 24 of them and are trying to get as many as we can. If you have a line on one or more of these let me know and I will trade you for something you want. I have found some really cheap on eBay and at check out my cards. I have seen some really expensive ones on Beckett Marketplace. There are also 25 Prime cards which we have one of us.

The Joy of a Completed Page-1957 Topps

1957 Topps Hit Stars, that is. This is an 88 card set of recording artists and movie stars. I started with having 3 cards from the set, Gene Kelly, Burt Lancaster and Elizabeth Taylor. This is the second time I have tried to build the set. I have never gotten as far as I have this time, as of today I have 67 of the 88 cards. There are two cards of many of the stars and there are four cards of James Dean, who died just two years before the set came out. There are many people that I have never heard of such as Chris Conner, Vaughn Monroe, Charles Gracie and Warren Belinger. I have three of the four James Dean cards. I still need The Teenagers, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Little Richard, The Crickets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sammy Davis, Jr., and one of the Jerry Lewis cards. There is a want list on the want list page.

Some New Padrographs

Anthony Rizzo was one of the most important parts of the trade of Adrian Gonzalez with the Red Sox. He spent a little bit of time with the Padres this year, he spent 49 games with the big league team. He spent the rest of the season at AAA Tucson. I got this in the mail, I made it and sent it to him before he had any cards from Topps.

Brian Guinn was drafted by the Padres in 2010 and spent this season at A Fort Wayne. I got this signed Pro Debut card off of Ebay.

Jose Dore was drafted by the Padres and spent 2010 with the AZL Padres. He split 2011 between Ft. Wayne and Eugene. My wife and I went down to Salem, OR to see a game between the Volcanoes and Eugene Emeralds and get some autographs. Dore was the only player for the Ems with a card in a Padres uniform. I got a bunch of the other guys on cards that I made.

I am trying to get back to blogging on a regular basis, I have been moving a my stuff and it is almost done. I am working on my Gint a Cuffs box, a couple of sets and I went to a game in Salem and got a bunch of autos.

Cheap Card Collecting is also having a contest at his place. We will try and fit everyone in a VW Bug.

The Daily Dimwit is giving stuff away also. After the party there we will going over to Katy Perry and Rebecca Blacks homes for some Friday fun.

A & G Warm up

I went to the LCS yesterday and picked up my box of A & G for my first time into Gints A Cuff. I also picked up three packs, I opened 1. I save packs for my birthday and Christmas since no one in my family buys me any thing for holidays. Today I picked up a rack pack and a retail pack at the closest Target store. These are the highlights of what I got out of the packs I opened. I am waiting to open my box until the commissioner posts the rules. Being the FNG to Gint a Cuffs I want to be sure that I know what is going on before I start. Everything here is for trade, I am looking for Padres, autos or relics of Padres or Guy Fieri, Stan Lee, Dirk Hayhurst and Rafer Johnson. Once I open my box I will be trading most of them also.

Nobody’s Perfect, Two Men, One Call, and a Game for Baseball History by Armando Galarraga, Jim Joyce and Daniel Paisner; 2011; $24.00; 246 pages; Atlantic Monthly Press, New York, NY; 978-0-8021-1988-9; Checked out from Multnomah County Library, Gresham; 7/5-7/6

Why did I pick this up? Because this was an part of baseball history and I wanted to know more about it. The umpire, Jim Joyce, lives in Portland and I had gotten his signature years ago.

What is the story? Armando Galarraga had a perfect game until the umpire blew the call on what should have been the last out of the game. What made this blown call different than any other blown call is the umpire’s admission of having blown the call, the gracious way Armando Galarraga accepted the umpires decision and the way the men came together. The story is told my Galarraga and Joyce in alternating chapters telling how they each arrived at that crucial point, how their lives led them to that encounter. They each tell of their memories of the incident and then of afterwards also. It is really a very frank book and each man should be congratulated for their integrity and graciousness. This is a game that will be remember far longer than the two perfect games that preceded it in 2010.

Did I like it? Yes, along with Mr. Paisner each man was able to capture their feelings and memories and share them with us. They are a couple of gentleman that I would like to share a dinner table with.

Grade-A

What is with the title of the review? Jason Donald was the player for the Cleveland Indians who was the runner in the infamous last not out of Armando Galarraga’s not perfect perfect game.

Willie’s Boys, The 1948 Birmingham Black Barons, the Last Negro League World Series, and the Making of a Baseball Legend by John Klima; 2009; $25.95; John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Hoboken, N.J.; 978-0-470-40013-5; Interlibrary Loan from Tigard Public Library; 5/19-5/25

Why did I pick this up? I am old enough to remember Willie playing. The first card I remember pulling out of a pack of baseball cards was a 1968 Topps card of Willie Mays. Also a member of the 1948 Birmingham Black Barons was Artie Wilson, whom I was privileged to spend some time with over the past few years.

What did I learn? The men of the 1948 Black Barons took the very young Willie Mays under their wing. In ’48 Willie was a sophmore in High School and Piper Davis, Artie Wilson, Ed Steele, Johnny Zapp and others showed him how to play and become a man. Willies’ father Cat insisted that Willie finish High School and get his diploma before playing professionally. There were all kinds of back room shenanigans going on in the race to sign Willie. There was all of kinds of racist bullshit also going on and that prevented some exciting teamings. Racism kept Mays from ever playing with either Ted Williams or Joe Dimaggio.

Did I like it? Yes, this is much more than a sports story. This is the story of a team that knows most of them don’t have a future in white man’s ball and they pull together to elevate one of their own so that his future in insured. They even sacrifice at times to make the dream come true for one of their own. The author is able to express the feelings and the dreams of these men. This team is much more than a team, they are family in many ways.

Grade-A+

What is with the title of the review? There is a passage on pages 282-283 that so moved me that I came home and read it to my wife, something I haven’t done in a long time.

George Stablein

George Stablein was once a contestant of the Dating Game and then was featured on the Newlywed Game, I don't he ever made it to Divorce Court. It was like a 80's reality show. Ok, Ok, I made all that up. Now I am going to go check references.

We might have been better off going with what I made up. George was born in October of 1957, which makes him a month younger than me. He went to West Torrance High School in Torrance, CA. Then he went to Cal State Dominguez Hills. He was drafted by the Padres in the third round in 1978. He played in the garden spots of Reno and Amarillo in 78 and 79. He got called up in 1980 and pitched in 4 games, with an 0-1 record and an ERA of 3.09. He then played in Hawaii for the rest of 1980 and 81 and 82. In 1983 he split time between the Padres Beaumont club and the Brewers Vancouver, B.C. team. Then he was done.
I got Mr Stablein signature through the mail with an address from Harveys list.

Ed Sprague

The only thing I remember about Ed Sprague off the top of my head is that he is married to an Olympic gymnast, Julianne McNamara I think. Time to go to Wikipedia and Baseball Reference. Be back in a couple of minutes.

Okay I'm back and wondering whom I have Ed mixed up with. He is married to Kristen Babb, who was an Olympic Gold Medalist in synchronized swimming. His Dad, Ed Sprague, pitched in the majors from 1968-1976. Junior won two College World Series at Stanford, and a Gold Medal in baseball in the 1988 Olympics. He played for the Padres in 2000, he played 53 games for San Diego was traded to the Red Sox, played 33 games for Boston, was released. He resigned with the Pads and finished the season with San Diego. He also played for the Jays, A's, Mariners, and Pirates. He admitted using PEDs and admitted hitting one run with a corked bat. He led the league a couple of years in HBP. He is currently the head coach at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. I don't recall how I obtained this signature.
P.S. Julianne McNamara is married to Todd Zeile.

Breakfast with the Boys

One of the volunteers at the book store I manage is also a waitress at a local restaurant, McMenamins Tavern and Pool. She told me there was a group of gentleman who had breakfast together on the third Wednesday of each month. She asked if I could come and have breakfast with them sometimes and they said yes. These are men in their 70's and 80's who grew up together in NW Portland, near Vaughn Street, where the Portland Beavers first played. One of the men is Dick Benevento, son of Rocky Benevento. Rocky was the longtime groundskeeper for the Beavers. I sat this past Wednesday with Vince Paveskovic, you may have heard of his brother, Johnny Pesky. Breakfast was just a couple of days after Harmon Killebrew passed away and Vince told a story about Johnny and Harmon. It was advice Harmon gave Johnny when they were both with the Senators, keep your head down and be good to the people. I am looking forward to joining the guys for more breakfast and stories.

Hey Welcome Back

            Hey I know you were all awaiting breathlessly for me to post something. Well here you go. I just read a history of the Pacific Coast League Padres and reviewed it. Today I did yard work, took my son to work and picked up dinner for my wife (where I had to wait for 1/2 hour for her break). Read a little bit in Willie's Boys, the story of the 1948 Birmingham Black Barons and the last Negro League World Series. It is a fun read because I have always been a fan of Willie Mays and one of the players on that team was Artie Wilson. I got to spend some time talking with Artie before he passed away last Halloween. My wife sewed for Arties' wife and when Ruth had something to pick up or drop off I would often go over and talk with Artie. It was great to hear stories of Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson, Cool Papa Bell and be introduced to Piper Davis.
             A couple of years the Multnomah County Library, whom I work for applied for the right to host an exhibit from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, titled Pride and Passion, the African-American Baseball Experience. When they began to write the application Amy, who was writing the application was told to talk with me about it. I gave her some input and she sent in the application, and the library was granted the right to host the exhibit. We will be hosting the exhibit November 30, 2011 to January 27, 2012. Cindy who got the assignment when Amy left is working to fill 12 display cases with cards, posters, scorecards and all kinds of other things to fill the gallery space. I am loaning some of my Negro League stuff, which centers around Artie for the exhibit. I know some of you collect Negro League stuff, if you would be interested in loaning some stuff for the exhibit please let me know. It would be mailed insured and insured while on display and returned to you upon the end of the exhibit. There will be security on the exhibit at all times, the gallery is in the Central Library in downtown Portland. Since Bud hasn't had a card made of him this year, I made a 2011 Padrograph card and mailed it to him. It took 42 days to come back. Hope Bud can guide the team to an even better record this year.

Horace Clarke played 99 games for the Padres in 1974 after being purchased from the Yankees part way through the season. He had played 10 seasons for the Yankees from 1965-1974. It only took 10 days for this card to make it all the way to the Virgin Islands and back. Horace never had a Padres card so I found a picture and made this card.

A big fan favorite and very obliging autographer and auto graph collector himself, Pat Neshek was signed by the Padres at the very end of spring training. As soon as I found a pitcher of him in a Padres uniform I made this card and sent it to him. I only took 8 days to get to San Diego and back. I am glad to be able to add these guys to my collection and I also added Dan Miceli, from a dealer to give me a total of 776 different signatures.

A couple of TTM sucess and some new collecting goals

I had sent this to Mr. Garland back in February c/o the Dodgers Spring Training, somewhere other than Vero Beach, and received it back yesterday. Garland spent one season in San Diego, before becoming a Dodger double dipper.

Ken Reynolds played 6 seasons in the majors with the Phillies, Cards, Brewers and Padres. He pitched in 19 games for the Padres in the Bicentennial summer of 1976. He went 0-3 and saved 2 games. I sent this 2011 Padrographs to him and it came back in a week. That is coast to coast to coast in a week, from Portland to Massachusetts and back. Thank you Mr. Garland and Mr. Reynolds.

I have embarked on a couple of projects that I will be sharing with you soon. I will be posting a want list of autos I still need soon. I am trying to get all of Heath Bells cards for 2011, all the base and variations and parallels. I have a large amount of 2011 Topps and Heritage, so if you need some let me know. I am still trying to trying to get more Padrographs and Bip Roberts cards. Padrographs are getting harder to find and hopefully some of the guys from last season will be signing their Padres cards. The Bip Roberts cards are parallels and team issued stuff that is turning out to be harder to find than I thought.

It's a Knockout

I recently won a contest at the Cardboard Connection and was awarded a box of UFC Knockout. Not being a UFC fan, I have only heard of a few of the guys. I did get all the relics and autographed cards that I was promised, with one redemption card. I really don't like sticker autos' some of the guys signatures are cut-off and incomplete. Hopefully I can trade these for some cool Padres stuff. Here without further comment are the inserts and parallels. These are all parallels numbered to 288.

Palaszewski, Davis, Hughes and Brown are numbered out of 188. Schaub and Guillard are numbered out of 88.

Forrest Griffin (Upper Left) is 07/18. Pat Barry is Authentic Fighter Worn Gear and numbered 115/188. Jake Ellenberger is also Authentic Fighter Worn Gear and is numbered 91/188. Miller, Edgar and Miller are are fighter worn and numbered 23/36. Frankie Edgar auto is 79/88, Tank Abbott is 101/188, Jake Ellenberger relic/auto is 55/188 and a redemption card of Rashad Evans.

Dan Spillner

Dan Spillner was drafted by the Padres in 1970 and made his major league debut in 1974 and then was traded to the Indians during the 1978 season. While he was in San Diego he pitched in 192 games for the Padres. I got this card signed through the mail.

Ed Spiezio

Ed Spiezio is the first player to get a hit, to hit a home run and score a run in the history of the San Diego Padres. He also won two World Series, unfortunately they were both prior to his arrival in San Diego in 1969. He won World Series in 1964 and 1967 with the legendary St. Louis Cardinals. He was traded to the Padres prior to the 1969 season and was traded to the White Sox during the 1972 season and was released after the 1972 season. I got this signed 1969 card off of ebay, it was either signed with a fountain pen or is stamped.

A Giant and Old TTM

10 days was all the time it took to get this card back from the O-Dog. I sent it to him care of the Padres. I also sent him the card below with Jason Bartlett, hopefully now I can send it back to Jason and have him sign it also. I would like to have both signatures on it. I had sent Orlando two copies of each card and told him he could keep a copy of each and keep the pen I sent him. He signed all four cards and sent the pen back also.

I haven't seen a card of my all time favorite Padre in awhile, so I decided to make my first Padrograph card of a non Padre. Tim also took only ten days to sign the card and return it to me. Tim signed both of the cards that I sent him.

Last night I got the last ever call on our land line. It was a friend saying that they had gotten some returned mail for me. When I sent out letters asking for signatures I usually put a return address of one of our friends who has lived in the same place for many, many years. We had moved since I sent this request out so it went to them. It is a return address that I haven't used for about six years so this card took a long time coming back to me. It is the second card I have gotten back in the mail.

Stan Spencer

Stan Spencer was drafted by the Expos and then taken by the Marlins in the Rule 5 draft in 1992. In 1997 he signed as a free agent with the Padres and made his major league debut with the Padres in 1998. He pitched in 23 games over 3 seasons with the Padres. He pitched through 2002 in the minors mainly for the Padres, spending his last season with AAA Las Vegas for the Dodgers. I got this signed through the mail.

Elias Sosa

Topps has a monopoly and has chosen not to make cards of some of the Padres. Over the last two weeks I have sent out cards to 19 different current and former Padres, many of the current Padres don't have cards I have made cards for several of them. I mailed these three out last Monday and when I got home today. Casey Kelly who was part of the trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to Boston.

Cameron Maybin came over from the Marlins in a trade last offseason for a couple of the Padres relievers. Colt Hynes was drafted by the Padres in 2007 and has worked his way the ladder, and is in camp this spirng as a non roster invitee.

Eric Sogard

Eric Sogard was drafted by the Padres in 2007 and traded to the A's in he was traded to Oakland with Kevin Kouzmanoff as part of a trade bringing Scott Hairston and Aaron Cunningham. He played so well for AAA Sacramento that he got a September call up for the A's and played in 4 games. I got this signed through the mail when Eric was still in the Padres organization.

Jim Snyder

Jim Snyder was a backup second basemen for the Twins from 1961-1964. After he retired he became a coach and in 1988 he was named interim manager of the Mariners when Dick Williams was fired part way through the season. I got this signed through the mail.

Roger Smithberg

Roger Smithberg signed this Bowman card under duress. In 1989 when Las Vegas came to town to play the Beavers I went to every game and got a ball signed by every one on the team and got all my cards signed that I wanted, except for Mr. Smithberg. Most of the other guys would laugh when I told them, they said that he was afraid that I would sell it for big bucks. When I told Manager Steve Smith about it, he took the card and the ball and told Smithberg to sign them. This is the only card that I knowingly have where the player was told to sign the card by his manager. He was drafted by the Padres in 1987 and signed by the A's as a free agent. He pitched in 15 games for the A's in 1993 and 1994. By the way there are currently 6 Smithberg items for sale on eBay, none of them signed.

Pete Smith

Pete Smith was drafted by the Phillies and then traded to the Braves, who hoped he could become another Smoltz or Glavine. He made his major league debut with the Braves in 1987 and then pitched through 1993 for Atlanta. He then played for the Mets and Reds before signing as a free agent with the Padres. He spent 1996 at AAA Las Vegas before pitching for the Padres in 1997 and 1998 before being traded to the Orioles. He finished his career in 1998 with Baltimore. I got this signed through the mail a few years ago.

Bip and Bell

Tim over at The Great Sports Hall of Fame alerted be to a couple of Bip Roberts cards I didn't have. Also on eBay I found a couple of Bips in a 1993 deck of cards. The card in the middle is from the 1997 Upper Deck set showing Bip and Reggie Sanders who had played together with the Reds.

Yesterday I came home to find my first returned TTM success. It only took a week to get to Arizona and back. Closer Heath Bell signed his 2010 Update and 2011 Topps cards for me, the 2011 card will be the latest edition to my one signed card per year since 1969.

With A Little Help from My Friends

The library system that I work for will be hosting an exhibit this December, sponsored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Smithsonian. We would like to add a little local flavor to the exhibit. In 1946 Jesse Owens owned a team in the West Coast Baseball Association named the Portland Rosebuds. The league only lasted about two months due to various things, only two of the teams in the league were financially successful. Dr. Layton Revel of the Center for Negro League Baseball Research has provided us with a roster of the team. We are having difficulty finding information on the players and I was hoping some of you out there could help us out. Below is the roster. Ozzie Smith

The Wizard, Ozzie Smith started his Hall of Fame career in San Diego. He was drafted by the Padres in 1977, and played 68 games in Walla Walla, Washington. He made his major league debut in 1978 and played four seasons for San Diego before being traded to St. Louis for their shortstop Garry Templeton. He played 15 seasons for the Cards. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002. I honestly don't remember where I got this signed card.

Ron Slocum

Ron Slocum played three seasons for the Padres from 1969-1971 after being drafted in the expansion draft from the Pirates. He played in 80 games over the three seasons. I believe I got this off of eBay. I believe that this is the Mike Corkins zombie card, either that or he is doing his Undertaker impression.

Termel Sledge

Termel Sledge played for two franchises and three teams. He made his made league debut with the Expos in 2004, then moved with the franchise to Washington D.C. and became a National. He was traded to the Rangers, but before he played for them he was part of the trade that brought Adrian Gonzalez to San Diego. He played for the Padres in 2006 and 2007, spending some time here in Portland. He played in Japan from 2008-2010. I couldn't find any indication of his status for this year. I had two copies of this card and sent them to Termel while he was here in Portland, he signed this one and I told him he could keep the other.

Luis Salazar

Luis Salazar racked up frequent flyer miles between Chicago and San Diego. He played three different times in San Diego. He played from 1980-1984 before he was traded to the White Sox, then back to San Diego for a year in 1987, then to Detroit for 1988, he split 1989 between the Padres and the Cubs. He played for the Cubs until 1992 and then has been coaching for the last 10 years in the minor leagues. I got this signed through the mail.

Don Slaught

Don Slaught made the team out of spring training in 1997. He then played in 6 games before being released in May. He played for six teams prior to the Padres and played 15 seasons in the majors before San Diego. I remember him as mainly as a Pirate, I didn't know he played for Kansas City. Bob Skinner

Bob Skinner was and always will be the only Padres manager to have a perfect record as manager. He managed one game for the Padres in 1977. This was not his first time with the Padres, he managed the minor league Padres to a PCL championship in 1967 and managed part of the '68 season before taking over for Gene Mauch in Phillie in 1968. I got this 1977 schedule card signed through the mail.

Tommie Sisk was signed as a amateur free agent in 1960 by the Pirates and made his made league debut in 1962. He played until 1968 with the Pirates and was the then traded to the Padres in 1969. He played that one season in San Diego going 2-16 with 6 saves in 53 games. After the season he was traded to the White Sox. He played in Chicago in 1970 and then retired. Todd Simmons played 6 seasons in the minor leagues for the White Sox, Padres, Rangers and Brewers. He played for the Padres from 1985-1988 at multiple levels. I got him to sign this many years later after finding his address somewhere.

Walter Silva

He has been playing since 2002 with Monterrey of the Mexican League, he was back there last year. My friend Greg Wibe got this signed at PGE Park after a Beavers game in 2009.

Sonny Siebert

Sonny Siebert finished his major league career in 1975, splitting time between San Diego and Oakland, although he never had a card with the Padres. His 1975 card is with the Cardinals and his '76 SSPC card is with the A's. I think between the first time I sent this to Sonny and when I actually got it signed was several years. He sent it right back the first time, but asked for a payment. It took me several years to get back to him, but when I did he was very prompt. I wonder how he would have looked on a SSPC card or '75 or'76 Topps card with the Padres (hint, hint).

Eric Show

What would happened if Eric Show had signed with the Twins in 1974. But he didn't, he signed with the Padres 4 years later. He pitched for the Padres from 1981-1990. Evidently his membership in the ultra right wing John Birch Society didn't sit well with everyone in the Padres locker room as did some of his other behavior. There is an interesting article about Show on ESPN.com . I got this signed through at some point with Eric was with the Padres. He was good about returning things and I have a couple of letters where he answered my questions about his music and some other projects.

Bob Shirley

Bob Shirley was responsible for Don Mattingly going on the disabled list in 1987. Evidently they were roughhousing and Donny Ballgame got injured. Bob played for the Padres from 1977-1980 before playing with several other teams. I got this card signed through the mail.

Craig Shipley

Craig Shipley is no Dick Cheney or Joe Lieberman but he is a senior vice president. He is the senior vice president of international scouting for the Red Sox. Shipley came from down under to play our national pastime and did for eleven years. The Dodgers signed him as an amateur free agent in 1984,in 1986 he was traded to the Mets and then in 1988 the Padres drafted him in the minor league draft. He played for the Padres from 1991-1994 until he was traded to the Astros as part of a multi player deal. He then came back to the Padres after one year in Houston, played two more years in San Diego and finshed his career with the Angels. I got this signed through the mail.

Andy Shibilo

Andy Shibilo played professional baseball up until 2009. He seems to have obtained by the Cards in 1998, he played in their system in '98 & '99. He played in an independent league in 2000, and in 2001 played at Lake Elsinore for the Padres, in 2002 he was traded to the Red Sox. After that he played in the A's organization and also was a farmhand for the Cubs, Mariners and Braves. He also played in Mexico and in various independent leagues. I don't remember how I obtained this signature.

Norm Sherry

Norm Sherry never played for the Padres, he just coached them. He had worked with Dick Williams in the Angels system and even took over the Angels for two years after Williams was fired. He worked with Williams again for the Expos and then was the pitching coach for the Padres while Dick Williams managed them from 1982-1986. I got Mr. Sherry to sign this through the mail.

Darrell Sherman

Darrell Sherman played in 37 games for the Padres in 1993, after being drafted in 1989. He played all his games in April and May. The Orioles took him in the 1992 rule V draft, but then returned him. Then the Rockies took him in the 1993 expansion draft. He played through 1995 in the minor leagues, disappeared until 2000, when he played in Mexico until 2003, he didn't seem to play in 2004 and played in Mexico again in 2005 and 2006. I think I got Darrell to sign this during his time in the minor leagues.

Gary Sheffield

Gary Sheffield wants to play in 2011 even though he hasn't played since 2009. He has over 500 homeruns but I don't know if he will ever be seriously considered for the Hall of Fame, because of his relationship with the media and some of the things that he has said about the game. He played for 4 years in Milwaukee before being traded to the Padres for 3 guys you have never heard of, after a season and a half in San Diego, during which he won a batting title, the only one of nine by a Padre that wasn't won by Tony Gwynn. During the Padres 1993 he was traded to the Marlins for future Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman. He then went on to play for the Dodgers, Braves, Yankees, Tigers and Mets. I got this cool looking signed Score Select card on eBay.

Andy Sheets

Andy Sheets was drafted by the Mariners in 1992 and made his debut with them in 1996. He played on the Mariners 1997 pennant winning team and then he was drafted by the Rays in the expansion draft. The same day he was traded to the Padres, he played on the Padres 1998 pennant winning team. During Spring Training of 1999 he was traded to the Angels (1999), he also played with Boston (2000) and Tampa Bay (2001-2002). He played in Japan from 2003-2007 with Hiroshima and Hanshin. I got this signed through the mail.

Al Severinsen

Al Severinsen was signed by the Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1963 then was chosen by the Orioles in 1965 in the minor league draft. He pitched for the Orioles in 1969 and after the 1970 season he was traded to the Padres. He pitched in 79 games going 2-6 saving 9 games for the Padres in 1971-1972. He was traded after the 1972 season to the Mets. I got this signed through the mail.

Wascar Serrano

Wascar Serrano will always be a major league with a .500 record. He pitched in 20 games for the Padres in 2001 and was 3-3 in those games. He was then traded to the Mariners at the end of 2001 with Alex Arias and Ben Davis for Brett Tomko, Tom Lampkin and Ramon Vasquez. He pitched for the Kansas City T-Bones in 2003 and then for a year or two in Mexico. I got this off of eBay.

Frank Seminara

Frank Seminara was drafted by the Yankees in 1988 and then was drafted by the Padres in the Rule 5 draft in 1990. He pitched for the Padres in 1992-1993 and then was traded to the Mets where he pitched in 1994. He then pitched for the Mets in the minors in 1995. What do you when you when your first career is over at age 28. I wonder what he has been doing for the last 15 years. At age 28 I was newly married and working at Waldenbooks, since then much has changed, it has been a fun ride. I think I picked this up on eBay.

Dick Selma

Dick Selma pitched a total of 4 games for the Padres, going 2-2. He was drafted by the Mets in 1963, and pitched for them from 1965-1968. Then he was drafted by the Padres in the expansion draft, pitched those four games and was traded in April to the Cubs for Frankie Libran, Joe Niekro and Gary Ross. He then pitched for the Phillies, Angels, Cardinals and Brewers. I got this 1969 Topps card signed through the mail.

The book is contracted by McFarland & Co., the great publisher of books about baseball and dance. It will be a book that covers just about every point of connection between these two magnificent disciplines (and, believe me, there are many!).

In the spirit of full disclosure I am a backer of Plie Ball, I have chosen to contribute and help get this book funded. Two of my favorite things are baseball and watching other people dance (cause I have absolutely no ability in that arena). Rudy Seanez

This card is from the second year of Topps Total, the easy way to tell is, it is a two player card. The first year all the cards were single players. I remember that there were many complaints among autograph collector about two player cards. Rudy Seanez pitched for the Padres 4 different times. He pitched for the Padres in 1993, 2001, 2005 and 2006. He was 8-5 over those 4 years and 94 games, which means he probably pitched in middle relief most of the time.

In 1992 I was working at the local card store and learning that peoples' perception was often their reality. People would ask us, for example, who wore 7 for the Yankees. We would tell them it was Mickey Mantle and they would insist that it was someone else. I would encounter this over and over in the seven years that I worked at card shops.
Tim Scott was one of the harder autographs I got. I chased him through multiple addresses using Smalling and Harveys' address list. He was drafted by the Dodgers in 1984 and made his major league debut in 1991 with the Padres. He pitched for the Padres from 1991 to 1993 before being traded to the Expos. He then played for the Giants and Reds before returning to the Padres in 1997. He also spent part of 1997 with the Rockies.

John Henry Scott

The two SSPC sets are a couple of my favorite sets of all time. I really like the look of them and they (like Topps Total and UD 40Man) have some players in them you don't usually find cards of. John Henry Scott was drafted by the Padres in 1970 and made his major league debut in 1974. He played in 39 games for the Padres in 1974 and 1975. He played in the minors in 1976 and then was part of the inaugrual Toronto Blue Jays in 1977. He then played a couple more seasons in the minors. I got this SSPC card signed through the mail a couple of years ago.

Mike Scioscia

Mike Scioscia was one of the harder Padres cards to get signed. He went to spring training with the Padres in 1993 but suffered a rotator cuff injury and didn't play at all that season. In 1994 he signed with the Rangers in an attempt to play again put couldn't recover from the injury. Mike will always be thought of by me as a member of the Dodgers, no matter how long he manages the Angels. If the Angels ever let him go, the Dodgers need to name him manager as soon as possible. Mike played for twelve years behind the plate for the Dodgers from 1980-1992. He caught two no hitters, one from Fernando and one from Kevin Gross. He went and learned Spanish so that he could more effectively communicate with Fernando. I sent this card to Mike multiple times, never receiving it back, I finally found this one on eBay.
